WICHITA — A pair of Great Bend High School golfers competed in the Class 5A State Golf Tournament on Tuesday.
Chance Haney shot an 81, and Cole Mulch carded a 105.
Both golfers had good practice rounds the day before.
“They both shot well in the practice round,” GBHS head coach Troy Stein said. “I told Cole (Monday) that sometimes it’s a kiss of death playing well at a practice round.
“We had a good round and had a great feel for a course.”
Haney had a good day at the tournament, but Stein said he still had some issues.
“He hit the ball well,” Stein said. “He didn’t putt great. If he had a couple of putts, he’d have finished under 80. That would’ve been a good score.”
Mulch struggled early on in his first time at the state tournament.
“Cole got a little nerves,” Stein said, “but I think he had a positive experience. He just got sped up. He played on his second nine (holes). He didn’t give up and he figured things out.”
Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the event, shooting a combined 300.
Kapaun’s Sam Stevens shot a 72 to win the individual title.
