HAYS — Chance Haney and Cole Mulch have qualified to represent the Great Bend High School boys’ golf team at the Class 5A State Tournament.
The team competed in the regional tournament in Hays on Monday, finishing in fifth place with 368 strokes.
“We could’ve played better,” GBHS head coach Troy Stein said. “Third place was 362, so we missed out on qualifying by six strokes.
“I’m happy for Chance and Cole, but I think we all feel like we missed out on a real chance to qualify as a team.”
Haney finished in fourth place overall, carding a 79.
“I think he’ll go and play well (at state),” Stein said. “He played well in nine holes at state last year.
“There’s a lot of pressure at regional, and he handled that very well. He handled the pressure pretty well last year, so I think he’ll be fine.”
Mulch finished at 90.
“He’s been pretty consistent this year, except today,” Stein said. “This was probably the worst round for him this year, but he’s usually very consistent.
“He’s tough, the way he stuck it out today. He’ll be able to bounce back.”
The 5A state tournament will be held at the Wichita Country Club on Tuesday, May 27.
