HAYS — On Friday, 23 high school wrestling teams decended on Hays for the Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic, which continued through Saturday.
After two days of wrestling, the Hoisington Cardinals found themselves in ninth place with 83 points.
Hays won the classic with 162 points. Goodland and Ulysses rounded out the top three teams.
The Cardinals brought 10 wrestlers to the classic and Hoisington head coach Dan Schmidt said that his team did well.
“(We) placed five out of the 10 participants we brought,” Schmidt said. “Three Cards that did not place lost in overtime or right at the bell in matches that would have placed them.”
Chance Demel was the highest-placing Cardinals wrestler, finishing in fourth place in the 140-pound weight class. Demel was bested by Riley Hunsicker of Ellis.
Zach Sanders (130), Dalton Bell (145) and Brady Moore (285) each finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes.
Ethan Soeken left Hays with a sixth-place finish in the 215 weight class.
Larned brought one competitor, Elvis Duran, who wrestled in the 112 class. Duran was beat by Kaden Kretzer of McPherson, knocking him into the fifth-place match, where he defeated Brook Baha from Goodland.
