WICHITA — The Great Bend High School girls’ soccer team fell to Wichita Southeast 2-1 in the opening round of the Wichita South Titans Classic on Monday.
The Lady Panthers jumped ahead early when Summer Bates beat the defense for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
“Summer got the ball from (Abigail) Arias,” GBHS head coach Gus Prieto said. “She got the ball past the last defender and went one-on-one with the keeper. She shot the ball into the low corner.”
Just 10 minutes later, Bates got injured.
“She got another one-on-one with the keeper, but this time the keeper slid and took the ball,” Prieto said. “She jumped over the keeper instead of stepping on her and she landed wrong. Her knee bent funny.
“She had to go to the hospital. The doctor said that it wasn’t anything important. It wasn’t a fracture or anything.”
Defender Jacky Montelongo injured her ankle in the second half.
The Lady Buffaloes scored twice in the second half with the second goal going in with four minutes remaining.
GBHS plays Wichita South today at 4 p.m.
