HUTCHINSON — The Great Bend High School girls’ swim team finished second at a Hutchinson swim meet on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Panthers finished with 353 points, trailing Andover, which scored 393.
“I was pleased,” GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said. “We had some good times. I think we’re continuing to show improvement both individually and in our relays.
“We need to pay attention to the details in terms of our turns, starts and finishes. The little things that, come the end of the season, that are going to make a difference.”
Beaumont said he was happy with how his team is competing with three meets remaining in the regular season.
“I think the next two meets are going to be good for us,” Beaumont said. “Our invite, we’re going to have some good competition. We’re at the point in our season where we need good competition to push us.”
Hannah Hildebrand led Great Bend with a pair of first-place finishes — 50-meter freestyle (27.58 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:06.96).
“She was solid as always,” Beaumont said. “She had a couple good races.”
Hildebrand was also part of the 400 freestyle relay that touched in at 4:14.89 for first place. Allison Damm, Kylee Spray and Michaela Cape swam the other legs of the event.
Cape clocked 1:09.51 in the 100 backstroke, a Class 5-1A state-qualifying time.
“We’ve got several individuals who have qualified this year,” Beaumont said. “Michaela put together a solid race today. We’re proud of her, and Maddie Vesta, Allison Damm, Hannah Hildebrand and all of our relays.
“Brianna Schartz is close on her breaststroke. We’d like her to get that in the next couple meets.”
The Lady Panthers host the Great Bend Invitational at Kirkman Activity Center on Friday, starting at 4 p.m.
Andover, Dodge City, Hays, McPherson, Manhattan, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South and Thomas More Prep Marian will be in attendance.
