LYONS —The Larned boys garnered their fourth victory of the season Tuesday as they outlasted the Lyons Lions 60-55 in a Central Kansas League basketball game.
Larned was led in scoring by Mason Schartz’s 14 points while Jonathan Herter added 12 and Chance Sanger nine. Larned (4-16, 1-9 CKL) will play top-seeded Pratt (15-5) in the Pratt 4A-Div. 2 substate March 2. Pratt downed the Indians 65-40 and 61-36 during the season.
Behind balanced scoring and a ball-hawking defense, Larned jumped out to a 15-10 first-quarter lead. They were able to extend that lead to 29-21 at halftime and shut out scoring leader Tyler Edwards to zero points. Terek Smith kept Lyons in the game with 13 first-half points.
In the second half Larned quickly jumped out to a double digit lead but a game Lyons team kept battling back. Larned led 41-32 after three quarters when Lyons pulled within four points. Behind Schartz’s two buckets and two free throws, Larned extended its lead to 12 points with three minutes left. Larned converted 15 of 32 from the free throw line but did make four free throws in the final minute to hold onto the victory.
Lyons’ Smith scored 21 points and Edwards added 15.
