DODGE CITY — There was no comeback victory for the Dodge City High School girls’ basketball team against Great Bend on Friday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
No 16-2 halftime deficit to overcome, which the Lady Demons had to do the last time these two Western Athletic Conference teams met last month in Great Bend. No last-second 3-pointer from Ashley Stephenson to bring the two-time Western Athletic Conference champions all the way back to overtake the Lady Panthers.
Dodge City outscored Great Bend 34-21 after halftime, including 17-12 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 45-37 victory.
“It’s been tough getting only two wins so far,” Great Bend head coach Jason Tatkenhorst said.  “The next day, the next practice, next game, the girls have listened to the coaches and they’ve tried their best together.
“The girls try really hard. Sometimes I think they try too hard … It happens. I just think they deserve to have something good happen for them.”
Brandi Schneider scored nine points, Morgan Harwood added eight points and Elizabeth Kutina totaled seven points to lead the Lady Panthers (2-16, 1-5), who shot 41.2 percent from the floor (14 for 34), but missed 10 of 11 3-point attempts.
They also committed 18 turnovers.
Brenna Briggs scored 12 points, Stephenson added 10 points and Alexis Sanchez scored eight to lead the Lady Demons (10-7, 3-2), who have made three Class 6A state tournament appearances in head coach Justin Briggs’ nine seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 2010.
Briggs captured his 101st victory against GBHS, coming one game after beating arch rival Garden City for his 100th win earlier in the week. His career record in Dodge is 101-91.
