Jordan Black, the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished off Thursday’s Baker play with a game-clinching “turkey” — three strikes in a row. Black’s strikes keyed the Panthers’ 199-183 victory in the third Baker game over Dodge City.
But it was ninth-grader Bryce Moore who highlighted the Panthers’ 9-2 WAC victory over Dodge City with a career high 686 series. Moore rolled games of 258, 214 and 214 to help the Panthers sweep Dodge City in a three-game series 833-594, 826-628 and 820-721. They gave the Panthers a dominating lead heading to the Baker format.
Moore bettered his previous high series of 676. Of the three games, Moore recorded strikes or spares all but two frames in the series.
“It’s always a key working on getting strikes and spares,” Moore said. “I had a lot of confidence today, but I know I have to keep my composure. If I get too happy, I start messing up. I try and keep my focus.”
Black placed runner-up (634, 193-222-219) and Kameron Keener placed third (626, 213-223-190). The trio carried the Panthers in the three-game series.
Dodge City fired Baker games of 201 and 191 to squeeze out two points in the Baker format where five bowlers compete.
When the Panthers rolled every fifth frame, they lost momentum. Several open frames led to a 125 first game, A.J. Roberts fired two strikes in the second game in a 191-177 loss. Black recorded four strikes and Kameron Keener added a pair of strikes in a final 199 game. Black and Keener marked each time in the final two games.
Moore said the bowling can change quickly.
“That’s just bowling,” he said. “We probably would’ve done better had we not sat down too long between games.”
Top scorer Jordan Vsetecka recorded the Panthers’ highlight with a first-place finish of 604 on games of 214, 181 and 199. Dodge City rolled to easy wins 659-627, 592-580 and 711-631 over the Panthers. Great Bend salvaged two poins in the Baker format, 152-140 and 126-121.
Dodge City’s Bamber placed runner-up (539, 173-151-215) and Burton placed third (538, 212-153-173).
