Sometimes wrestlers have to bump up or down a weight class, necessitated to benefit the team in dual or tournament competition.
Such was case for Great Bend High School in a dual with Western Athletic Conference foe Dodge City on Thursday night at the Panther Athletic Center. The Panthers registered a 46-24 win over the Red Demons.
“It was a good team win,” Great Bend head coach Norbert Muth said. “I liked the way our guys competed, and we had to bump some guys up in weight a little bit and I think our guys that did that, they made the most of it.
“We put some guys in situations that weren’t best for them, but it was because we needed to win as a team, most notably Jeremy Sigler bumped up from 170 to 182, Justin Henry bumped up from 182 pounds to 195 and Ramon (Garcia) bumped from 195 to 220.”
Sigler won by fall over Connor Kinkelaar with 29 seconds remaining in the first period. Henry lost by decision, 9-7 to Freddy Hernandez, and Garica lost by decision, 8-5 to Francisco Serna.
“I thought Jeremy would be fine,” Muth said, “and the other two guys, I wasn’t sure how the other two would handle it, and Ramon always wrestles his heart out.
“I was real proud of Justin Henry. He was outmanned and outgunned. The other guy was stronger than he was, weighed more than he did and older than he was, but he kept battling and stayed right in there. He might not have won, but he did what he needed for the team.”
For one, the Class 5A state champion at 112 pounds last February, Chris Burley of GBHS dropped from 126 during the previous meet to 120 against Dodge. He won by decision over Alex Garcia, 7-1, a rarity for him not getting a pin.
“It was his first time to drop down in weight,” Muth said. ”That probably had something to do with it. It’s a process, and the other thing is that (Garcia) is a three-time (6A) state placer.
“All of my assistants have been doing a good job working with the wrestlers. We’ve had some good practices. It’s a learning experience. Our wrestlers are coming along. I don’t know of anyone that went out there and laid on the mat. We had good effort, and that’s what we ask for.”
