WICHITA — The Great Bend High School boys' swimming team took 11th place at the Wichita Heights swim meet on Saturday.
The Panthers finished with 90 points. Wichita East finished with 400 points to take first place.
"We had probably our best meet of the season to date," GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said. "The competition where was by far the toughest that we've had this year. There were a lot of good races.
"I thought the kids stepped up and competed well. I think 2/3 of the team had season or personal bests in most of their races."
Kade Cook led the team with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. He touched in at 59.88 seconds.
"His timing in the butterfly event is getting to where it needs to be at the end of the season," Beaumont said of Cook. "We're getting that point in the season where we are just working on cutting down our times. We're working on our starts and our turns.
"We've got less than two weeks and four meets left before the season ends."
Justin Kuhlman took seventh place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.88 and ninth place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.81.
Michael Haines returned from an injury that kept him out of the water for nearly two weeks. He finished in 20th place in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 6:02.23.
"Michael Haines came back and swim despite practicing three days in the last two weeks," Beaumont said. "We limited him to two races, but he's got two weeks to get himself back into shape, so we're keeping him in the water a lot.
"Missing a couple of weeks has put him behind in his conditioning, but he can do it. He's capable of getting ready in the next couple of weeks."
Great Bend's home meet today will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Kirkman Activity Center on the Barton Community College campus.
