Thunder on the Plains champions crowned

Champions were crowned Sunday for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at SRCA Dragstrip in Great Bend and the NHRA West Central Division that included Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and the rest of the classes that encompass the nationwide series.

Great Bend’s Michael Shelton was ranked third and fourth in motorcycle qualifying with a 2009 Hayabusa, SMC, 0.007.
Great Bend’s Rachel Smith competed in the SRCA Super Street division.
Smith was selected as the only woman in Kansas to represent the state at the 9th Annual Moser Great American Bracket Race in Memphis, Tenn. Smith’s Kansas team will consist of six other drivers that will compete against other teams from different states. Smith’s 1968 Chevy Camaro will make the trip to the Memphis International Raceway for the races Sept. 8-10.
Smith has competed in the Race of Champions for the SRCA and has performed well at larger money races.
The event is one of 46 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.

Larned softball wins opener LARNED — Larned's softball team scored 39 runs to dominate the Ellis Railroaders 21-4 and 18-5 in Friday's doubleheader. LARNED 21, ELLIS 4 (G1) — Larned's Brooks Simmons tripled and drove home a trio of runs. Driving home a pair of runs were Eowyn Hedding, Maya Wilson, Teagan Walker, Jadyn Crosby and Jillian Hagerman. Hagerman and Karley Lemuz each doubled. Lemuz (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. The Indians took advantage of nine walks, seven errors, six wild pitches and two hit batters. Ellis' Maleah Vine drove home two runs. Rylan Aschenbrenner had an RBI LARNED 18, ELLIS 5 (G2) — Larned's Hedding doubled and drove in three runs. Walker and Hagerman each drove in two runs. Driving home one run were Lemuz, Brooke Simmins, Crosby, Ivy Hope and Gillian Smith. Crosby (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. Railroader Vine drove home two runs.
