Two Cardinal golfers earn top 10 finish

HAYS — Hoisington’s Maleigha Schmidt (51-47—98) earned fourth medalist honors and teammate Liza Ward (55-50—105) placed seventh at Monday’s Hays-Thomas More Prep Golf Invitational.

The Cardinals shot 434 to place third at Smoky Hill Country Club. Twelfth-place Trinity Dolezal (55-54—109) and 19th-place Addison Smith (63-59—112) also counted for the Cardinals.

Hays-TMP shot 417 to earn first place. Defending 321A state golf champion Shannen Chin (80) of TMP earned medalist honors for the third consecutive year. Concordia’s Abby Donovan (95) placed runner-up.

The Monarchs and Hoisington will compete in Monday’s 321A golf regional at Lake Barton Golf Course. Hoisington placed fourth last year (406) and Schmidt (95) placed seventh, Dolezal (104) 22nd, Smith (128) 56th and Ward (131) 63rd last year at Hays. 

Teams qualify for 321A state golf Oct. 15 at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

Larned splits baseball twin bill LARNED — Larned's baseball team rallied for a 12-1 second game victory over Lyons. The Lions won the opener. LYONS 5, LARNED 4 (G1)— Lyons' Zayn Zambo scored the game-winning run on Deacon Showalter's fifth-inning groundout. Lyons reliever Anthony "Ace" Ventura retired seven consecutive batters to earn a save. Logan Isaac scored on Ethan's Luck sacrifice fly in a 3-run third inning. Blake Smith and Ventura scored on Porter Anderson's single. David Meyers scored on a fifth-inning error for a 4-2 lead before Zambo scored a fifth run. Carson Shaver scored on Tristan Regan's first-inning single. Camden Bird scored on a Hunter Hobbs' fourth-inning double. Down 5-2, Larned's Andres Gonzalez scored on Mason Miller's single.
