At Just Say It Though, shop owner Christen Markovich decided to channel a love for crafting into a business providing unique, handmade wares though a variety of media.
Markovich describes herself as a self-taught crafter. It began with an interest in quilling, an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Having come across a quilled project, she decided to learn how to do it herself online.
“It’s really relaxing for me,” she said. “I like detailed work, so anything really detailed or really small that I can really work at, I enjoy it.”
She said she began selling her crafts at the Christmas Craft Mall downtown, and decided to build it into a business, eventually moving into a storefront in the Zarah Mall. Recently, she relocated to 2604 19th St., at the northwest corner of 19th and Washington streets. Last week was her first at her new location.
In addition to quilling, she creates handmade cards, string art, wood-stain drawings, macrame, book-folding, painting and other types of custom crafts.
Much of the work she does is centered around different themes, including several holidays, but she said she takes custom orders, and typically gets a lot of orders for weddings and other special occasions. Some products on display in her store include cards, ornaments, decorative wall hangings, picture frames, mugs and more.
How long each project takes can depend on the complexity of the project, she said. Especially with quilling, she said, more complex ornaments with several different parts can take a significant amount of time to complete.
