A new mural taking shape at Larned State Hospital is more than a colorful addition to campus – it’s a symbol of the people and purpose that define the hospital every day. Centrally located on the remaining section of the Lee Building, which was razed earlier this year, the mural serves as a prominent reminder of the hospital’s commitment to its employees, its mission, and its future.

Created by local artist Melanie Ryan, the mural features the hospital’s new slogan, “One Heart. One Team. One Mission.” The artwork serves as a lasting reminder that every employee, regardless of department or role, contributes to the shared mission of providing exceptional care and service. Ryan shared that she especially loved the hospital’s use of the color orange, noting that it symbolizes new hope, energy, and motivation—qualities she felt were especially fitting as Larned State Hospital continues moving into a new era.

Once the mural is complete, the transformation of the area will continue. The LSH Grounds Maintenance team will begin xeriscaping the space in front of the mural, creating an inviting landscape that enhances both the artwork and the surrounding campus.

The site will also become home to the hospital’s time capsule and 100-year anniversary commemorative bench, preserving the hospital’s rich history while creating a meaningful place for reflection. Looking ahead, plans are already underway for a covered gathering space that will provide employees, visitors, and community members with a welcoming area to gather and enjoy the campus.

Together, these projects represent Larned State Hospital’s continued investment in its campus, its history, and – most importantly – its people. As the mural nears completion, it stands as a lasting reminder that the hospital’s greatest strength has always been the dedicated individuals who come together each day with One Heart. One Team. One Mission.
