Sunflower Electric Power Corp. announced that its board of directors has named Dr. Al Tamimi as the corporation’s next vice president of transmission planning, policy and compliance.
Tamimi began his tenure at Sunflower in 2001. He most recently served as the senior manager of planning and distribution engineering where he directed plans to meet transmission and distribution requirements for Sunflower and its six cooperative members.
“I am honored to be selected to this position for Sunflower,” Tamimi said. “I am not only passionate about my profession, but I am also passionate about the cooperative business model where our goal is provide our members with reliable energy at the lowest possible cost.”
In his new position, Tamimi will provide leadership and implement strategies relating to transmission planning and build-out, transmission policy, regulatory affairs and compliance issues. He will also represent Sunflower with various national, regional, and state organizations and regulatory agencies, working to shape transmission energy policy that benefits Sunflower’s members and those they serve in central and western Kansas.

Dr. Al Tamimi—Tamimi earned a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wichita State University in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering from Kansas State University in 2011. In 2014 he was elevated to the grade of senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest association for the advancement of technology. Tamimi is a registered professional engineer in Kansas since 2005. He serves on the NRECA Transmission and Substation Assets Group (The MAG Group) and several Southwest Power Pool (SPP) working groups (MOPC, TWG, ESWG and MDWG). Tamimi has served as the chair for the SPP’s High Priority Incremental Load Study. Prior to his tenure at Sunflower, he was employed by Pizza Hut as a development manager for corporate and franchise units in Kansas.
Tamimi and his wife, Amy, have two children.
