Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Are you ready for the big 250th Independence Day? Need something to spice up your 4th of July BBQ? You still have today and tomorrow (July 2 and 3) to try out our D.I.Y. BBQ Rub Station. Check out our offerings; we have recipes, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your own. Jars are also provided for your convenience. Come grab yours while supplies last and let us help you throw a 4th of July BBQ to remember!
With the fourth coming up in just a few days, and a very special one at that, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the current book for our History Book Club, “1776” by David McCullough. “In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence—when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.
Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, “1776” is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color; farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King’s men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.” - Goodreads
Copies of “1776” can be picked up at the front desk, and the club will be meeting on July 18 at 10:30 a.m.
After our week off, we are kicking things back into gear on Tuesday the 7th with Story Time and Tween Scene at 10:30 a.m. For this week’s Tween Scene, we are doing Sweet Summer Science. Join us for tasty experiments, from S’mores Slime to Ice Cream in a Bag to a Watermelon Volcano! Later that day, at 4 p.m., teens will have the chance to try out that same program.
Wednesday, the folks from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will be here at 10:30 a.m. to teach us about the hidden wonders of our local Cheyenne Bottoms with a hands-on adventure. Come enjoy an interactive reading of “Over and Under the Wetlands,” play wetland themed games, create a “resist-art” card, and meet one of the wetlands snake ambassadors!
Last but not least, on Thursday, July 9, we have a Teen Movie at 3:30 p.m. We will be showing the latest Pixar Disney offering about a girl who hops into the body of a beaver to save the glade she grew up in and cherishes. Then that evening, we have our Adult Craft Night. We are doing something new this time – we are calling it Unearth a Craft! Have a project that you haven’t started yet because you don’t have the time? Come on in and work on your craft with the group. This is a great time to make some time for yourself and a new hobby.
