This month of May the Pilot Club of Great Bend delivered thousands of geraniums from their annual fundraiser to supporters of the club throughout the city and county, installed a new executive board for the 2022-2023 service and program year, welcomed and initiated the latest of their 12 newest members into the club, and in support of Bike Safety Awareness month, donated and fitted free bike helmets through their international signature initiative “Helmet People” to 28 Great Bend USD 428 students with perfect attendance. Pilots’s Helmet People remind everyone a helmet that does not fit properly will be no help protecting your brain when needed most. That is why they take the time to go through the steps to properly fit each helmet the club gives away.
Pilot Club of Great Bend is a member of the guiding organization Pilot International, an international civic organization established in 1921 with a focus on education and support and prevention of brain-related disorders and injuries of all types. Pilot Club of Great Bend has for 34 years been a chapter of Pilot International whose mission is to influence positive change in communities throughout the world. To do this, they come together in friendship and give people an outlet for service.
Pilot Club supports the “ABCs” of Pilot International: Advocating Leadership and Service in youth and young adults; Brain Safety and Health; and Caring and supporting caregivers in the community and families in times of need.
As a club the plan for the coming year, which begins July 1, is to implement several projects to aid and support the community. Pilot members annually sponsor and gather donations for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s; plan workshops and programs on autism; use their award winning BrainMinders program to teach brain injury prevention to youth, along with “Helmet People” bike helmet giveaways; and raise awareness with seniors on brain illnesses and disabilities that come with aging, while working and donating to several community activities and programs to fulfill the club mission to improve the quality of life in our community.
Club meetings are in-person at noontime on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Perkins restaurant, 2920 10th St. To learn more about Great Bend Pilot Club go to https://www.greatbendpilotclub.com or like Pilot Club of Great Bend on Facebook.
