STERLING — After summer productions of “Forever Plaid” and “Gypsy,” the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe will close out their summer show series with a unique two-person musical entitled “Pete ‘n’ Keely.” The show centers around a divorced singing duo who reunite for a television variety show in 1968. It will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 in Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus.
The show is described as a delightful musical that captures the essence of a bygone era with its humor, charm, and nostalgic music. Set in 1968, the show follows the reunion of a famous singing duo, Pete Bartel and Keely Stevens. Think more Steve Lawrence/Eydie Gorme than Sonny and Cher. The couple have been divorced for five years but reunite to perform together on a live TV special.
The musical showcases their tumultuous relationship, blending comedy and heartfelt moments with classic tunes from the period as well as original songs. With its catchy songs, witty dialogue, and engaging storyline, Pete ‘n’ Keely offers a delightful experience for audiences, evoking both laughter and sentimental memories of the golden age of television and variety shows.
Playing the roles of Pete and Keely will be husband-wife team of Larry and Amy Brownlee. Larry Brownlee is band director at Sterling College while Amy Brownlee is head librarian for Sterling public schools. Both have performed frequently in musicals both in Sterling and Hutchinson.
Although Pete ‘n’ Keely is a two-person show, it takes many more to bring the show to life. Sterling music theatre veteran and retired music educator Mark Clark is directing the production. Sterling resident Megan Giorgetti will be pianist for the show. Sterling residents Ben Decker and Amanda Higginbotthom will play bass and drums, and Bella Brownlee will be on alto saxophone.
The show is a family affair for the Brownlees. Their three children will also be featured in the show. Bryson Brownlee will be the television announcer for the show while daughters Macy and Bella will be the stage managers for the show – both onstage and offstage.
Sterling actor Jake Pieplow will play the role of Jacob Jamison, the TV producer who prepares the television studio audience for the show.
Besides playing Pete, Larry Brownlee is also the set designer while new Sterling College theatre technical director Greg McGlynn handles lighting. Sterling resident Donna Foster is doing costumes and Sterling College alum Nya Williamson will be handling wigs for the show.
Tickets for the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe’s production of Pete ‘n’ Keely are $15 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the door before each performance.
