Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library!

We have a big event for kids this Saturday, November 14th: the statewide event, Kansas Reads to Preschoolers! This event is geared towards children ages 0-5, but you are welcome to bring the whole family to this come-and-go event at your convenience between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Little ones can look forward to dancing to some groovy tunes while enjoying an ice cream treat. When they are all danced out, don’t forget to grab some special take and make crafts on the way out. Families will also be able to pick up a free copy of the book, “Groovy Joe Ice Cream and Dinosaurs” by Eric Litwin (please limit one book per family; first come, first served).

Our Open Book Club meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. We will be discussing “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. The book follows Kya, known in her small, North Carolina town of Barkley Cove as the “Marsh Girl.” After being left alone in her small hut in the marsh at a young age, the intelligent and brave Kya learns to use her knowledge of the marshlands to live and even thrive on her own for years. But when the handsome Chase Andrew turns up dead, it doesn’t take long for the locals to start pointing fingers at the hermit. This fantastic book has been critically acclaimed many times for its amazing story of the bravery and endurance of the misunderstood Marsh Girl. Copies of this book can be picked up at the front desk.

Starting Monday, teens and adults can pick up a D.I.Y. Gratitude Journal kit. Utilizing simple materials provided in the kit, learn how to make your very own journal with a positive twist. Once you’ve made your journal, you can use it to list all the things you are grateful for and share with friends and family on Thanksgiving. Kits are limited; first come, first served.

Our Online Teen Anime Night stream starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night. This meeting will be all about the series “The Promised Neverland” by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu. Teens ages 13 and up are welcome to come to the front desk to get a copy of the manga to read and discuss with other teens before we watch the first episode of the anime together Thursday evening. The story follows orphans Norman, Emma, and Ray through a somewhat darker take on Alice in Wonderland. This is a great manga for teens familiar with Lewis Carroll’s works. Anyone interested in tuning into the stream should use the code @gbmanga in the Remind app or on remind.com or text it to 81010 (standard messaging rates apply).
