STERLING – The annual Sterling College Student Art Show is currently on exhibit at the Art Gallery, 306 West Washington, Sterling. The reception for the show will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 at the Gallery.

Art faculty member Brian Prugh said, “The purpose of the student exhibit is to showcase and celebrate the artistic achievements of Sterling students both in the Art & Design department and outside of it.” Thirty-four pieces are in this year’s show which was curated by senior art student Acacia Haspels from Nairobi, Kenya.

As curator, Haspels selected the art as well as created all the posters and labels for each of the art pieces in the show. She will also organize and run the reception and is responsible for taking the art work down at the end of the run.

“Usually, all the pieces in the show are by art majors, maybe one or two pieces that aren’t, but this year we had a lot of submissions by non-art majors which I am glad for, Haspels said. “I would like to have other students involved in the arts as well.”

There are a variety of media in the student show: charcoal drawings, photography, costume sketches, ceramics, paintings, and graphics, among others.

Winners will be announced at the reception on April 11. Visitors to the exhibit may vote on their favorite piece which will be named the “People’s Choice” winner that night as well.

The Sterling College Art Gallery is in the Art/Media Center, 306 West Washington, Sterling. The Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Visitors are asked to use the east entrance. There is no admission charge for the exhibit or the reception.
