Artist Dan Beck is shown at his home in Wichita.

LUCAS — Visions of Dan Beck, a retrospective of paintings by the late Wichita artist, will be displayed at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas until March 17, 2023. The open house for this exhibit will be on Nov. 12.

The art center, 213 S. Main, is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m., until November, then Thursday through Saturday from 1-4 p.m., except on holidays.

The fall open house will create an opportunity for visitors to learn about Beck, visit the galleries, meet his family, and enjoy desserts and drinks at the Grassroots Art Center.

Dan Beck was a two- and three-dimensional artist from Wichita. He worked in a variety of media, from limestone sculpture to jade carving and acrylic paintings.

Excelling at debate, he attended the University of Kansas on a debate scholarship, went on touring the world, and later worked as a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army and as a volunteer coach at Wichita East High. In his later life, his love of rocks led him to become a jade carver and collector, especially of wearable art. He particularly enjoyed encouraging new carvers by purchasing their earlier work. The research skills he learned in debate enabled him to explore and benefit from many cultures around the world. Multicultural elements can be found in much of his work.

Beck loved his art. He passed away on Aug. 6, 2020, at the age of 71, leaving an extensive and eclectic body of work to his wife and traveling companion of 47 years, Chris Poelma.

Admission is $9 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. For more information, call 785-525-6118 and visit the website atwww.grassrootsart.net. Keep up to date with upcoming exhibitions, workshops, and events by visiting the Grassroots Art Center on Facebook and Instagram.
