The Barton County 4-H Winter Classic Air Rifle Sports Match was held on Saturday at the Great Bend Expo grounds. Shooters from all over the western part of the state came out to qualify for the state match that will be held in April.
“This is a great event,” instructor John Reh said. “It teaches these kids decision-making skills, fundamentals of firearm safety, social skills, technical skills and even math skills.”
There were 38 shooters at the match. They could reach a total score of 600 but the shooters only needed a score of 400 to qualify for the state meet. They shot from three different positions, standing, kneeling and prone. The match followed the CMP National Standard shooting rules.
All levels of shooters from 4-H were invited to participate from ages 8 through 18.
These shooters began their practise season in October and they will have six competitions starting in February, ending in April with the state match.
Shooters only have to qualify at one match, but according to Reh these young people will try to make it to all six events to get more practise in and stay sharp for the state match.
