The Great Bend Public Library has many activities going on now that the summer library programming has officially begun. Thank you to everyone that joined us last Friday for the summer kickoff event with the Cosmosphere and Karen Land; we all had a blast! If you want to read all about our exciting events this summer, visit our website or our Facebook page. This week, I am going to focus on some cool upcoming events geared mainly toward adults.

Tomorrow (Saturday, June 8), the library will be hosting local gaming store Mind Sculpt Games for a board game day. This will happen during library open hours on Saturday (from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), and this event is open to ALL AGES. It’s a perfect event for families to get some together time, teens to chill with friends, or adults to try some of the latest games. You are even welcome to bring your own board or card games to share during this come-and-go time.

At 6 p.m. next Thursday, June 13, adults will have a chance to learn more about organizing their home. Local business owner Sonya Rein, also known as “The Errand Lady,” will be talking about clutter, organizing myths, and how to get started organizing in your own home. If you feel overwhelmed by clutter, are tired of feeling disorganized, or want to have a system to help you find things easier, this is the event for you.

The week after will include a great topic for the Open Book Club. At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, the book club will be talking about “Hidden Figures,” by Margot Lee Shetterly. This book (and the recent film with the same name) discusses the impact of several female African American mathematicians who were instrumental in the success of NASA’s space program, the space race, and the Apollo missions to the moon. Because the library is closed during this time, the book club will meet at Perkins restaurant (no purchase is necessary).

Finally, in several weeks (on Wednesday, June 26) there will be a mobile classroom in the library’s parking lot offering technology classes for adults. The state-of-the-art LearnIT bus will be visiting from Wichita and offering a Basic Computer Skills class at 10:30 a.m. and a Microsoft Office & Google Software class at 1:30 p.m. If you would like to register for one of these classes, please stop by the library to fill out a registration sheet, or fill one out online at our website.

Remember, for events or other library information, please visit our Facebook page or website (greatbendpl.info), stop by the library (1409 Williams St), or give us a call (620-792-2409). We hope to see you soon!
