LYONS – The Alden man who Wednesday afternoon led law enforcement on a high-speed chase from Ellinwood through Barton and Rice counties before engaging in a standoff with officers at his home faces multiple charges in connection with the incidents.

David Madden, who remains in custody in the Rice County Jail, has been charged with assault of a law enforcement officer after threatening to drive head-on into a Sterling police officer, Rice County Sheriff Bryant Evans said.

In Ellinwood, Police Chief Art Keffer said Madden faces counts of driving with a suspended license as a habitual offender, and felony flee and elude (including speeding, failing to signal turns and running stop signs). A K-9 unit was called in and the dog indicated there may have been narcotics in the vehicle.

The car has been impounded, Keffer said.

As for Wednesday, Madden surrendered at his home in Alden after a 20-30-minute standoff. Before being arrested, he sped from the scene in Ellinwood at about 3 p.m. Speeds reached up to 90 miles per hour as Ellinwood police officers pursued him into Rice County.

Rice County Sheriff’s Office deputies then became involved as well. At one point, the suspect drove head-on towards a Sterling Police Department officer, but a collision was avoided.

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was called by Ellinwood to assist.
