BCC to host sexual assault awareness presentations
1-Tribune

Barton Community Colleg’s Sexual Misconduct and Assault Resource Team (SMART) will host events as part of Sexual Assault Awareness month during April.

“The Hunting Ground” Screening - This event will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 21 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. “The Hunting Ground” is an Academy Award nominated, “ground-breaking” documentary that addresses sexual assault on college campuses through the stories of survivors fighting for justice. Immediately following the screening, Barton’s SMART Champions and The Family Crisis Center Advocates will host discussion panels to open a dialogue about the issues raised in the film. This event is open to all faculty, staff, students and community members interested in viewing the film or being a part of the conversation.

“You Throw like a Girl: Challenging the Perceptions and Changing the Culture” student speaking engagement - At 8 p.m. Monday, April 25 in the Kirkman Gymnasium, former Syracuse and NFL Quarterback Donald McPherson (donaldmcpherson.com) will be discussing dating violence and society’s “narrow expectations of masculinity while simultaneously establishing an understanding that girls and women are ‘less than’ men.” The presentation focuses on nurturing positive language and understanding masculine identity and will be directed to college students. Local high school students and community members are welcome to attend. This event is sponsored by Barton Student Life and Barton Athletics.

“You Throw like a Girl: Challenging the Perceptions and Changing the Culture” community professionals event - At 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 in the Shafer Art Gallery, former Syracuse and NFL Quarterback Donald McPherson (donaldmcpherson.com) will focus his discussion of society’s narrow expectations of masculinity and its effects on women for local business and law enforcement professionals. The Family Crisis Center is inviting local professionals to attend this event, and Barton’s SMART team hopes to see Barton faculty and staff participate in this discussion as well. This event is sponsored by the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence.
