There were numerous reports Thursday afternoon of loud booms heard over the area, some rattling windows. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the Sheriff’s Office received several calls as well.
He contacted operations at Eisenhower Airport in Wichita. “They advised there was an active military training area over central Kansas this afternoon that coincided with the loud booms heard over Barton County. These were most likely caused by scheduled military training.”
The Oklahoma Army National Guard in Tulsa, which is home to the 138th Fighter Wing, operates over Kansas. They were contacted by the Great Bend Tribune Thursday afternoon.
The public affairs officer was unaware of the situation, but passed the inquiries along. The officer indicated a response might not be available until Monday.
