LARNED — Just like today, the soldiers and civilians at remote frontier posts looked forward to celebrating our nation’s birthday. To celebrate this year’s Fourth of July, Fort Larned National Historic Site is presenting special programs on Tuesday, July 4, along with staff and volunteer in period clothing in the buildings.
Schedule:
10 a.m. – Blacksmith Demonstration
11 a.m. – Firing Demonstration with Small Arms and the Howitzer
Noon – Salute to the flag (per 1861 U.S. Army orders)
1 p.m. – The Cannoneer’s Hop: Learn the steps of loading a cannon in this hands-on program - (no firing included)
2 p.m. – Firing Demonstration with Small Arms and the Howitzer
3 p.m. – Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Larned
4:30 p.m. – Flag Retreat (traditional Army flag lowering ceremony)
