Two men made their first appearances in Barton County District Court on Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Erin Smith in Great Bend over Labor Day weekend.

Keegan Ray Martens, 19, has been charged with second-degree murder and aggravated endangering a child. His bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety with GPS monitoring. He remains in custody at the Barton County Jail.

Daylan Kane Sherwood, 22, was charged with aggravated endangering a child, interference with law enforcement and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His bond was set at $100,000 on the new charges. The court also held him without bond on a probation violation stemming from a May 2026 aggravated domestic battery conviction.

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting both cases. The Barton County Attorney’s Office forwarded the case to the AG following the initial investigation.

Smith was found deceased from a gunshot wound in the backyard of a residence on the 1400 block of Lakin Ave. at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sept. 5 after police responded to a 911 hang-up call. Martens allegedly fled the scene and was apprehended in Salina.
