City will burn tree pile starting today

Because of abuses of the compost site, the Great Bend City Council Monday night approved an ordinance more strictly enforcing the rules.

The City of Great Bend will begin burning biggest tree pile at the city’s compost site this week. Work plans to start today and could last up to a week since officials need to take advantage of the current wind conditions.

“This pile needs to be taken care of to clear the space and allow for additional room in case we would have an ice storm,” said James Giles, Public Works Street Division supervisor. The pile will be manned by city staff 24 hours a day.

“The City of Great Bend appreciates the patience of the public while this work is being performed,” he said. “It is likely if the wind is right that you might smell or see the smoke, we do not want the public to be alarmed.”
