A CUT ABOVE - Local caricature carver wins Merit Award
CCA members present an award to Barry Bowers 2020

Barry Bowers, Great Bend, was recognized recently with an award for his caricature wood carving. The Caricature Carvers of America (http://cca-carvers.org/aboutus.html) is a group of carvers from around the country. Since the group’s inception in 1990, its members have worked to promote the art of caricature carving through a national competition, public exhibitions, woodcarving seminars and new books.

The CCA members can present the Merit Award anytime they decide a carving deserves recognition.

Bowers spent the week of Oct. 18-23 at the 26th Renegade Woodcarvers Roundup in Lebanon, Tennessee, and his latest carving, “Selfie,” was recognized with the CCA Merit Award.

“Probably the proudest moment in my carving career is to be recognized by a group as well respected as the CCA,” Bowers said. "There were five CCA members present at the seminar and they are in the photo presenting the ribbon to me.”

Bowers is a longtime member of the Golden Belt Woodcarvers group, which meets from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday (except on holidays) at the Great Bend Senior Center. All current woodcarvers and anyone interested in learning more about woodcarving are encouraged to attend.

Guests are always welcome. Classes can be arranged for beginning carvers.

For more information contact Bowers evenings 793-6121 or days 792-5378.
