Cyclist killed after hit by pickup

A Great Bend man died Friday morning after he and the bicycle he was riding were struck by a pickup truck, the Great Bend Police Department reported.

At about 6 a.m. Friday, GBPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of Second and Hubbard in reference to an injury accident. They found that Eliesel Cartagena, 42, was riding a bicycle westbound in the 1500 block of Second, and Ian Trimmer was driving a 2011 Dodge pickup, also westbound on Second. 

According to a GBPD news release, Cartagena turned in front of the pickup at Hubbard. The vehicle struck Cartagena, knocking him from the bicycle.

Cartagena was transported to the University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus by Great Bend Fire Department ambulance. He died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.  The Police Department was assisted by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and the Great Bend Fire Department.  

An investigation is ongoing.
