Golden Belt Community Foundation announces 2016 Scholarship Awards

Golden Belt Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2016 scholarship award winners. Out of 106 applicants, a total of $52,990 in scholarships were awarded to 49 deserving students for the upcoming 2016-2017 academic school year.
Allan V. Miller Family Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Chari Miller and her family, in memory of Allan Miller. The intent is to assist Great Bend and Ellinwood students in pursuit of an agriculture related college degree. Cody Wondra – Ellinwood High School – attending Kansas State University
Amy C. Harter Memorial Scholarship
Amy C. Harter’s constant smile had a way of brightening up everybody’s day. Her strength, courage, spirit and love of Christ were the foundation of her in all she did for family and community. The intent of this scholarship is to assist a Larned High School graduate in pursuit of a degree related to business. Landon Erway – Larned High School – undecided
Bill J. McKown Memorial Scholarship
Bill J. McKown had a passion for scouting and art. He worked as a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the summer after his freshman year in college at the University of Kansas. His gift for art was nurtured with lessons since the third grade. He sculpted a bigger than life panther that still stands under glass in the Great Bend High School hallway. He established this scholarship fund to support students attending Barton Community College that have scouting experience or an interest in the art field. Bob and Rosalee Roth Family Scholarship
Robert and Rosalee Roth were married on September 11, 1954 in Wichita. They lived in Oklahoma City from 1955 – 1957 while Robert served as a 2nd Lt. in the US Air Defense Command. They then moved to Larned to join Roth Equipment Company, a retail farm equipment store and lived there for 51 years where they raised their family. The Roth Family has strong ties to both Pawnee County and the University of Kansas. Bob and Rosalee wanted to help Pawnee County students experience life as a Jayhawk. The intent of this scholarship is to assist Pawnee County high school students planning to further his or her education at the University of Kansas. Cap Proffitt Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established for Ellinwood High School graduates with a preference given to past or current FFA or 4-H members and agriculture majors. Cap Proffitt graduated from Sterling High School. A resident of Ellinwood since 1989, formerly of the Alden/Sterling area, he was the manager of Barton County Feeders, Inc. He attended the First Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion; Rotary Club, Kansas Livestock Association, National Cattleman’s Beef Association, GTO Association of America, Great Wichita GTO Club, and was a board member and partner of Ellinwood Country Living. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart. Abbie Reichuber – Ellinwood High School – attending Barton Community College

Chester Crane Memorial Scholarship
Mr. Crane was a lifetime resident of Pawnee County, he was a retired clerk/maintenance person for Doerr Manufacturing of Larned for 60 years. He was of the Christian Faith, Charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Life Member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. This scholarship is intended for Larned High School graduates attending a Kansas college possessing a financial need. Cinco de Mayo Barton County
This scholarship was established to acknowledge the efforts of Great Bend High School students that participate in Cinco de Mayo. Tanya Sanchez – Great Bend High School – attending Fort Hays State University
Ethel D. Holmes Scholarship
The Ethel D. Homes Scholarship was established in 1991. Mrs. Homes was a teacher and it was her desire to give a scholarship to individuals of high character and moral stands wishing to pursue a higher level of education. First American Baptist Church of Larned Scholarship
The First American Baptist Church of Larned established this scholarship fund to support students that have a future impact on ministry, mission work, or a service occupation. This could be informal ministry such as active church participation. Landon Erway – Larned High School – undecided
Kansas State University Scholarship
Our KSU Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by alumni, both businesses and individuals, in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties who wanted to assist local students in obtaining a college education from KSU. Students who grew up in one of the above-mentioned counties and who attends or plans to attend KSU are eligible to apply for this merit based scholarship. Mingenback Family Fund
The Mingenback family created a scholarship fund for aspiring health practitioners, which encourages personal and professional commitment to the community. “Dr. John,” as he was known to his many patients, embodied the characteristics of servant leadership. Always dedicated to the patient’s understanding of dental health and preventative care, Dr. John’s philosophy was one of serving his patients. Through 47 years of practice, he often knew three-to-four generations within a family who chose him for their dentist. This was the ultimate compliment to Dr John – and due to his ability to know his patients as friends – his family and community benefited. Dr. Mingenback loved his patients, took an interest in their lives, eased their pain and followed Golden Rule throughout his career in the Golden Belt. Paul J. Urban Memorial Scholarship
Paul J. Urban created a scholarship fund for Great Bend High School seniors. Paul graduated from Fort Hays State University and received his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He was also a graduate of the Command and General Staff College of Fort Leavenworth. He taught at St. Joseph’s Military Academy and later started teaching at Great Bend High School. He taught mathematics for 20 years at GBHS. He served during World War II and was in the active Army and Reserve for 33 years and retired as a colonel. This scholarship shall be based on financial need, scholastic abilities, and character, with the emphasis being on the financial need. Ryan Hugh Dunlap Memorial Scholarship
The family of Ryan Hugh Dunlap created a scholarship fund for Great Bend High School students who wish to enter the fields of education and/or sports medicine. As a graduate of Great Bend High School, Barton Community College, and Southwestern College, Ryan was tirelessly dedicated to his students and athletes. His lifework was as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher. He took pride in the camaraderie of team sports and watching his student’s succeed. Ryan Joseph Bealer Memorial Scholarship
The family of Ryan Joseph Bealer has created a scholarship fund for male students, graduating from Great Bend High School, wishing to enter the engineering field. Ryan moved through his life with a uniquely gifted spirit. Ryan’s computer and engineering abilities were exceptional in that he not only mastered the technology, he also mastered creativity. Ryan loved video games, and was selected as a “beta-tester” for Halo III. He made many movies which included his friends and classmates. Ryan selected his friends and activities carefully. Once selected as a friend, he was loyal and true. Ryan had a “short list” of extracurricular activities and community service engagements, but he was committed and gave 110% to those few; rather than expanding a lengthy list just to build a resume. Ryan was always true to his character and values, and would chose being alone rather than sacrifice for the sake of social status. Ryan loved animals and they loved him. Ryan touched lives in a deep and quiet way, and this scholarship is a way to continue to honor Ryan and promote his values. Dodge Nily – Great Bend High School – attending Kansas State University
Samantha C. Harter Memorial Scholarship
Samantha (Sami) C. Harter was a vivacious, happy, fun-loving girl with a huge heart and kind spirit. Her biggest thrill was riding horses. She began riding at a young age and enjoyed training for English Saddle competitions. Sami played guitar, piano, and loved to sing. Vida M., Dorothy C., & Vivian M., Archer Scholarship
The Archer sisters created a scholarship fund for students demonstrating financial need. The Archers wished to help students who truly are in need of financial assistance in order to further their education. Recipients must be a Barton County resident attend a Kansas college.
