Three seniors from Great Bend High School were recently awarded the Summerfield Scholarship and admitted into the University of Kansas Honors Program. The Scholars Recognition Reception took place on April 3 in Lawrence at the University of Kansas Campus in Hasinger Hall. Dr. Kala Stroup, a Great Bend High School graduate, Woman’s Hall of Fame Recipient at the University of Kansas and Watkins-Berger Scholarship Alumna was the Keynote Speaker for this very prestigious award banquet.
The GBHS seniors receiving the Summerfield Scholarships and acceptance into the University of Kansas Honors Program were Austin Morgan, Dakota Ellis and Joshua Prescott. They were presented this prestigious award based on their community service, scholastic achievements, high ACT scores, and a formal essay. Only a selected few seniors nationally are awarded this scholarship and admitted into this Honors program, and to see three qualifiers from one high school is, as Mrs. Stroup put it, “beyond rare.”
