The Great Bend Fire Department responded to this house fire Tuesday night in the 1800 block of Tyler Street. The home received extensive damage, but the residents were not home at the time of the blaze.

A Great Bend home received extensive damage from a Tuesday night fire, but no one was home at the time of the blaze, Great Bend Fire Chief Brent Smith said.

At about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, the Great Bend Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the 1800 block of Tyler Street in Great Bend.  Fire units arrived to find a single-family residence with smoke coming from the eaves, Smith said. Fire crews began an initial fire attack and were met with heavy smoke, fire, and high heat conditions.

“Crews were able to make a quick initial attack to extinguish the fire while a search was completed of the residence to ensure everyone was out of the structure,” he said. Occupants of the residence were not home at the time of the blaze.

The fire was investigated by an investigator with the GBFD and remains under investigation at this time, but appears to be accidental in nature, he said.

The residence has significant fire, heat, smoke and water damage throughout.

“The Great Bend Fire Department would like to thank the Great Bend Police Department, Wheatland Electric and Kansas Gas Service for their assistance at the scene,” Smith said.
