The Grassroots Art Center in Lucas is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the exhibition Flying Free: 25 Years of Grassroots Art. Unique and original works of self-taught, outsider art by 121 Kansas artists and 19 artists from around the country will be on display through Oct. 31, 2021.
Grassroots art highlights inventiveness and the use of non-traditional materials. Works on view include a papier mache circus, limestone carvings, kinetic sculpture, drawings and paintings, fiber arts, and art made from repurposed, recycled, and natural materials. Selected by founding Art Center executive director Rosslyn Schultz, the exhibition is appropriate for visitors of all ages and galleries are handicapped accessible. Original gifts are available in the Art Center shop.
Grassroots artists and their environments occupy locations across the entire state. Kansas is ranked nationally as the third highest state with documented grassroots art environments, and Lucas is recognized as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art by the Kansas Sampler Foundation.
Winter hours through March are Thursday-Saturday from 1-4 p.m. The Art Center, 213 S. Main, abides by the Russell County mandate, and masks are required for entry. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children 6-12 years old. For more information, call 785-525-6118 or visit the website at www.grassrootsart.net.
