Erick Zayas hopes his home town will support his bid for a career as a stand-up comedian by attending his live show this weekend at the Crest Theater.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the shows start at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. The Crest Theater is located at 1905 Lakin Ave.
Comedy at the Crest II is Zayas’s second live comedy show here. This time he’ll be joined by Steve Peters, a fellow finalist in the “Funniest Person in Wichita” contests at the Looney Bin. These headliners will be joined by host Levi Mabe and featured comedian Maverick McWilliams. Both Zayas and Peters will be professionally filming 30-minute specials.
Zayas is a Great Bend High School graduate and attended Barton Community College.
“I moved to Wichita about a year and a half ago to pursue my passion of stand-up comedy,” he said. “In that short time I’ve been able to achieve many different goals. I’ve traveled all over Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma producing shows or getting booked on shows.” In 2020 he was named “Wichita Rookie Comedian of the Year.”
The first Comedy at the Crest was last May.
“It was extremely successful despite the show taking place during graduation weekend,” Zayas said. “My team and I are preparing for the another amazing show at the Crest Theater on March 5th. This time the show is a lot different and a whole lot more special. I’m co-headlining with Steve Peters (and) we are also professionally filming and producing our first 30-minute specials. Our goal is to sell out the theater.”
Zayas said he tries to make people laugh as he shares his observations about the life of a 24-year-old man, first from the dating scene and now as the father of a newborn child. His daughter was born in November.
Because of the overwhelming support he received at the show last year, Zayas said Great Bend was his first choice as a venue to film his special.
Peters was named Fourth Funniest Person in Wichita and was part comedian Mo Alexander’s “Fully Vaxxed & Mostly Waxed Tour.” Mabe, another up-and-coming comic who hails from Wichita, performs and bars and comedy clubs throughout the heartland. McWilliams is from Oklahoma City.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at the “Comedy at the Crest II” Facebook page. Zayas noted that first responders, veterans and students are eligible for discounts.
