GBHS Debate Squad takes home 11 awards

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Great Bend High School Debate team competed at the Arrowhead Invitational held in Hays. Four teams competed and took home a total of 10 medals, placing 2nd in sweepstakes out of 13 schools and 42 teams total.
In the novice division, out of 20 teams, Ashtin Heath and Aaron Miller placed 4th, Trae Black and Kris Gieck placed 6th. Heath was also awarded 2nd best novice speaker and Black was awarded 4th best novice speaker.
In the varsity division, out of 22 teams, Carter Sheffield and Kane Schumacher placed 4th. Schumacher said “It was a very fun tournament and everyone did great.” Michael Gieck and Kameko Schultz barely missed placing with a 3-2 overall winning record. In addition to placing, Sheffield was awarded the overall best speaker award with Gieck following up close behind with the second best speaker award in the varsity division.
All of the teams contributed to a large triumph of placing 2nd in sweepstakes. Sheffield said that “It was a great tournament and I’m very surprised we did so well as a team.” The team plans to compete at the Buhler debate tournament next Saturday.
