Shutting down the school building for a day didn’t interrupt learning at Great Bend High School. Instead, students had a “remote learning day” last Friday, according to Andrea Bauer, public information director for Great Bend USD 428.

GBHS classes were dismissed at 2:19 p.m. Thursday after a water main broke in the neighborhood. Students were told that there was a possibility of a remote learning day on Friday.

“The plumbing crew on-site (from the City of Great Bend and ComfortPro) was hopeful to have water restored that evening but everything didn’t work as planned,” she said. “We emailed staff, students and guardians on Thursday evening letting them know that learning would be remote on Friday. Water was restored Friday afternoon and school resumed on-site Monday.

Students take home their Chromebooks and learning materials each night, so switching to remote for a day was no problem, Bauer said.
