Golden Belt Community Foundation will be hosting a one-day grant writing workshop March 25, at The Front Door on 1610 10th Street in Great Bend. This workshop is available to non-profit organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Stafford and Rush Counties who wish to learn more about the skills needed to successfully submit and obtain grants.
Attendees can expect to hear Fred McLean, Wichita State University instructor, speak on many topics in this full agenda. Topics include “Ten Things That Will Kill Every Grant Application,” the importance of a team approach to your grant writing success, what a grant reviewer looks for, researching the best grants most applicable to the mission of the non-profit organization, the “must haves” of every grant and more.
Workshop instructor, Fred McLean has this to say about the class, “If you are the kind of person who wants to advance your program’s funding stream so that you can accomplish your goals, then this grant/proposal writing course is designed for you. We teach solid basics and provide ongoing support after the class.” McLean goes on to say, “Philosophically I’m at the place where I want more people writing grants in Kansas. Actually, not just writing grants but writing good grants to the right places that get funding.”
The foundation is excited to bring a speaker of Mr. McLean’s caliber to Great Bend. “As a community foundation, our board feels it is important to help build the capacity of our local non-profit organizations.  One way that we felt this could be accomplished is by hosting a grant writing workshop locally. We hope that organizations attending will be encouraged and excited to seek out additional grant opportunities,” Christy Tustin, Executive Director of Golden Belt Community Foundation.
About the Speaker
Fred McLean started writing and directing grant programs in the early 70’s. After those grants ended successfully under budget, he began writing grants for small volunteer organizations (24-hour crisis hotline, alcoholism recovery program, innovative mental health programs).
In the 80’s, Mr. McLean wrote grants and directed more programs primarily in healthcare. Joining KPGA (Kansas Professional Grant Association) he held offices including three terms as president. He was also a member of GPA (Grant Professionals Association).  For more than ten years, Mr. McLean has taught classes at Wichita State University and in various other places around the Midwest.
Mr. McLean’s formal education includes a Bachelors from Southwest Baptist, Mini MBA from W. Frank Barton School of Business, Center for Management Development, Institute for Human Development, Princeton University, Group Work Process and University of Missouri.
