Great Bend High School’s Student Council got a green light Monday to organize the fifth annual all-day school-wide Community Service Day. Weather permitting, it will be held on April 26.
For the past four years, the high school students, supervised by high school teachers, fulfilled service projects at various sites for charitable, educational, religious and governmental organizations. Since 2013, students have been assigned to painting, picking up trash, planting trees and other tasks at sites such as Brit Spaugh Park and Zoo, the Barton County Courthouse, the Golden Belt Humane Society, the Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen, and the Barton County Landfill.
This year’s service day was approved by the school board on Monday. Interim Superintendent Khris Thexton commented, “It’s a great opportunity for our kids to get out and give back to the community.”
