LYONS — Twenty-three enlarged Christmas and New Year’s postcards from 1880 to 1918 are on display at the Rice County Historical Society’s Coronado Quivira Museum, 105 West Lyon, Lyons, until Jan. 4. The postcards are part of a larger group donated by Gladys Ritterhouse to RCHS in 2018.
Most of the postcards have holiday greetings to Rice County residents. Sentiments reflect a much simpler time. The card served in most situations as the annual correspondence with friends and relatives over 100 years ago. The two-cent postcard and its one-cent postage were extravagances that had to last a year for many people and many people kept the beautiful cards for years.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Holiday hours are 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and the museum will be closed on Christmas Day. On Thursday, Dec. 26, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following week, the museum will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Dec. 31, closed New Year’s Day, and open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 2.
