Barton County Commission meeting at a glance

Here is a quick look at what the Barton County Commission did Wednesday morning:

• Appointed Gloria Bogan, District 4 Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger and Brooke Haulmark to the Central Kansas Community Corrections  Board. These uncompensated terms all end March 2025, and there remains one unfilled position on the board.

Community Corrections is a state and local partnership which promotes public safety by providing highly structured community supervision to felony offenders, said CKCC Director Amy Boxberger. State statutes govern the advisory board membership, qualifications and appointment provisions. These applicants were for  “general” membership.

The board has met quarterly, Boxberger said. But, at the request of the commission, meetings will be held monthly.

This also involves some structural changes to the board, said commission Chairman Shawn Hutchinson, District 3.

• Discussed commission-led expanded efforts to recruit and retain county employees.

Barton County currently has 14 positions open in the County Works, Communications, County Attorney, Sheriff and Health departments, said Human Resource Director Brenda Kaiser.

•  Heard a legislative update from District 2 Commissioner Barb Esfeld. Included was information on various bills and committee work.

In all, there are 14 open positions across a variety of Barton County departments and offices, Human Resource Director Brenda Kaiser told the County Commission Wednesday morning.

“We have some individuals who’ve retired causing current openings within our Road and Bridge Department and Sheriff’s Office,” she said. “We also have openings for RNs at the Health Department and an opening for an assistant county attorney.”

The positions in the county are great for individuals who like a predictable schedule and want to have a more limited travel schedule, she said. Most travel, other than training, is limited to Barton County.

“For individuals who like to work with their hands and don’t want to work in the office, we have opportunities for equipment operators at Road and Bridge and Solid Waste,” she said. They also have some summer positions available for individuals looking for work after high school graduation.

“If you’re a registered nurse and want a Monday through Friday schedule to be home with your family, we have openings at the health department,” she said. At 911, “we have opportunities for individuals to assist our first responders. These individuals work shifts and can reduce the cost of childcare for some families.”

The Sheriff’s Office has openings for detention officers. “This is an entry level position which can lead to other opportunities at the Sheriff’s Department for those that might be interested in a career in law enforcement.”

If one prefers the courtroom, the assistant county attorney is available.

All of these except the summer jobs are full-time positions with benefits and the Kansas Public Employment Retirement System retirement plan

The vacancies are currently listed on the county’s website at bartoncounty.org.
