The weekend’s freaky weather had an effect on attendance on Saturday’s annual Pawsome Egg Hunt, but the canines and owners that did show up had a good time.

Snow appeared briefly in the hour prior to the start as Great Bend Rec staff members and volunteers scattered eggs on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park. It abated just in time for the air horn as the canines took to the grass to sniff and point out their eggs filled with a tasty doggie treat. Gold-colored eggs contained a message to come to the registration table for a special prize.

Some shivered their shaggy coats, while others wore colorful jackets for the fest.

Great Bend Rec’s Megan Hammeke noted that a total of 46 canines participated in the event. Some entrants were three- and four-year veterans of the hunt, which the Rec began in 2021.
