MACKSVILLE — Once upon a Wednesday ... students enjoyed a Fairy Tale themed program put on by the Macksville High School FCCLA group and the Macksville City Library. This program was made possible with help from a South Central Community Foundation $2,000 Community Grant.

A total of 26 princesses, knights, and princes, Kindergarten through 5th grade, gathered after school to hear stories, play games, eat snacks, and decorate crowns. The young lads decorated shields and talked with teen role models about modern day chivalry (good manners), while the young ladies decorated wands and bonded with teen leaders while having their nails painted. Twenty FFCLA students helped lead the festivities, under the guidance of sponsor Laura Wolff and librarian Jody Suiter.

SCCF grant funds were used for craft supplies, new books, snacks, photos, and more. Funds also helped purchase a new book shelf for the Children’s Section and were used to purchase supplies for our Stuffie Sleepover last fall. SCCF is a regional foundation that manages charitable funds for seven counties in South-Central Kansas.

The library is excited to have new fairy tale books, and a new place to showcase them! As C.S. Lewis is famously quoted: “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”

And, as Neil Gaiman wrote in Coraline: “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” What an important message for kids today!
