ELLINWOOD — No injuries were incurred in a welding shop building fire early Thursday morning, although the building was a total loss, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir reported that at approximately 12:29 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to 487 SE 80th Ave. southwest of Ellinwood for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 30x30 foot shop building completely engulfed in flames.

Initial investigation indicated welding activity was in progress inside the building, when sparks or slag ignited the insulation in the wall. Four individuals in the shop were unable to bring the fire under control and the Ellinwood Fire Department was called to the scene.

The EFD, which was assisted by crews from the Great Bend Fire Department, quickly brought the scene under control; however, the building was a total loss. There were no injuries.
