Halstead sweeps Cardinals

HALSTEAD – Halstead’s pitching shut down Hoisington 5-1 and 8-3 to sweep the Cardinals in a battle of Central Kansas League softball contenders. Halstead (13-3, 11-3 CKL) drops Hoisington (14-6, 9-5 CKL) to fifth place.

HALSTEAD 5, CARDINALS 1 (G1) – Hoisington pitcher Ellie Crawford (7-2) led the Dragons 1-0 through five innings. Jordyn Boxberger scored the Cardinals’ run on a first-inning error.

A 2-out error cost Crawford in a 1-1 tie after Brett Young tripled and scored on a groundout. Thea Boese and Callyn Divine scored on the error. Katherine Engel doubled home Rylee Carmichael. Engel scored on a Cardinal error for a 5-1 lead.

Halstead pitcher Kaci Young dominated the Cardinals by striking out 17 Hoisington batters with a 2-hitter.

HALSTEAD 7, CARDINALS 3 (G2) – Hoisington’s Crawford drove in two runs and Mollie Steiner drove in one run.

The Dragons scored seven runs off Jordyn Boxberger (7-4), four unearned thanks to four Cardinal errors. Kaci Young, Brett Young, Mya Morris, Divine, Carmichael and Cheyenne Thompson drove in runs.
