SYLVAN GROVE — Residents of Sylvan Grove and surrounding communities are invited to take part in a once-in-a-generation celebration as the town marks its 150th anniversary on Saturday, May 23. Centered around the theme “Rooted in Our History ... Reaching to Our Future,” the event promises a full day of activities honoring the town’s rich past while celebrating the spirit of its future.

The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a community parade through town. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including food and vendor booths, children’s games and activities, a youth watermelon seed spitting contest, a beard contest, and a community scavenger hunt. A tractor and classic car display will also highlight the region’s agricultural heritage, while local museums and historical sites will host open houses, exhibits, and live demonstrations.

A special highlight of the celebration will be the bank robbery reenactment, a tradition that has been performed in past milestone years, 50 and 25 years ago, and will once again bring local history to life for attendees.

The reenactment is based on a dramatic real-life event that unfolded on Nov. 12, 1894, when three armed men rode into Sylvan Grove intending to rob the town’s bank. While the robbery nearly succeeded, it was ultimately thwarted thanks to the quick actions of a young bank teller and the use of a Sharps rifle. The story has since become one of the most well-known episodes in the community’s history.

Historical records later linked one of the robbers, Anthony McKee, to a group believed to have been involved in a string of crimes across the region. Despite investigations and widespread speculation, the case was never fully solved, adding to the enduring intrigue of the event. Over time, the story of the attempted robbery, and the people connected to it has become part of the folklore that shapes Sylvan Grove’s identity.

In addition to historical programming, the celebration will also include a school alumni open house, offering former students an opportunity to reconnect and reflect on shared memories. The day will conclude with a live band and community dance, bringing residents and visitors together in a festive close to the milestone event.

Organizers hope the sesquicentennial celebration will not only honor the town’s deep historical roots but also strengthen community bonds and inspire future generations. With activities designed for all ages and interests, the event is expected to draw attendees from across the region.
