GARFIELD — Pawnee County fire crews fought a prairie fire for 12 hours along the Arkansas River west of Garfield Saturday and Sunday.
Larned Fire Chief Don Clapham said crews from Garfield, Larned, Lewis and the Larned State Hospital were first called out at 6 p.m. Saturday before returning at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Clapham said 600 acres of CRP grass, trees and brush were burned north and south of the Arkansas River. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
A bulldozer and a tanker truck that carries between 6,000 and 9,000 gallons of water were provided by the Pawnee County highway department.
