Lab days scheduled
LARNED — Appointments are being accepted for the Pawnee County Health Department’s monthly lab days, scheduled for Friday, June 22. The clinic starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. at the 1st floor of the Pawnee County Courthouse, 715 Broadway. Patients need to fast for 12 hours before the appointment.

Available lab tests are Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, $30; PSA (prostate specific antigen) $20; and HGBA1C $10. Comprehensive Metabolic Panel includes lipid profile, thyroid TSH, electrolytes, liver enzymes, glucose, hemogram (CBC) and other tests.
The health department offers the service in conjunction with Pawnee Valley Community Hospital and Quest Diagnostics. The first-come, first-serve, walk-in clinic requires no appointment. The lab days are on the fourth Friday of each month. No insurance is billed and clients are responsible for following up on any abnormal results with their private medical provider.
Larned Playgroup set
LARNED — The Sunflower Education Group is sponsoring a Pawnee County Playgroup from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 at the Doerr-Vernon Park Splash Pad. The playgroup is designated for children from birth to age 3 years and their siblings.
Children should bring their own towels. Popsicles will be provided at the end of the evening.
Computer classes offered
LARNED — The Jordaan Memorial Library is sponsoring free computer classes. The first class is offered from 10 a.m. to noon today. Other classes are offered from 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 26 and 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 28.

Coed league to form
LARNED — The Larned Recreation Commission is organizing an adult coed softball league starting in July. Games will be played on Sunday evenings. To enter a team, call 620-285-6002.
Candidate to visit
LARNED — Republican Mitch Holmes, a current Kansas House representative for the 114th District, has filed for the Kansas Senate. He will visit Larned to meet his constituents at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28 at Glory Be, Seventh and Broadway.

Insect workshop
will start June 29
LARNED — Pawnee County will be the site of the 20th annual Kansas State Entomology Workshop Friday, June 29 through July 1 at the J. A. Haas building in Larned.
Activities will include insect games, educational classes, collection trips, contests and guest speakers. The workshop is open to 4-Hers, Scouts, teachers, project leaders or anyone interested in learning more about insects in a fun and creative atmosphere.
Activities are geared toward group interaction, challenging and fun learning experiences, and leadership skills training. For registration or information contact Vicky Wallace, 620-285-6231.
“This year we will have a class on the new photography phases of 4-H entomology,” Wallace said.
Quilting Bees meet
LARNED — In the absence of the president, Diann Morell welcomed Merlene Baird of Larned as a new member of the guild.
A thank you goes to Mary Weber of Garfield for numerous amounts of fabric for prayer quilts. Members are currently working on three prayer quilts. The bug’s fat quarter drawing was won by Melvina Prescott of Garfield.
Next month’s fat quarter drawing will be political/Americana. Announcements included a workday on June 23, Santa Fe Trail Center’s quilt show running through early July, Wichita Quilt Show June 22-24, 12 ½ in. block contest in the Edwards County Fair in July, Pawnee County Fair with entries due on July 25, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In the recent Patchwork Edition magazine by Fons and Porter, Gina Janes of Hannibal, Mo., daughter of Merlene Baird, is featured as one of the professional quilters on a featured quilt. The next regular meeting of the guild is July 3. For additional information call 620-285-6033.
