Retirement reception set

LARNED — A retirement celebration for A. J. Halling is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday in the conference room of the Activity Therapy Building at the Larned State Hospital.
Halling has worked 28 years serving the patients at Larned State Hospital as a member of the Activity Therapy Department.

Flu clinics scheduled

LARNED — The Pawnee County Health Department will hold a flu vaccine outreach clinic Friday at First State Bank from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Community Health Fair. A clinic is scheduled Saturday at Progressive Therapy and Sports Medicine, 117 W. 6th Street, for their Run For Charity, from 7:30 a.m. until the race is finished. Run for Charity Saturday

LARNED — Progressive Therapy and Sports Medicine will sponsor its 3rd annual Run For Charity Saturday to celebrate National Physical Therapy Month. races scheduled are 5K and 10K races and a 2-mile walk.
Registration will be at 7:15 a.m. with the races starting at 8 a.m. Proceeds raised for this event will benefit the Ministerial Association of Pawnee County. The Pawnee County Health Department will be on site for flu and pneumonia shots.

Pumpkin Patch Saturday

LARNED — The Sandstone Pumpkin Patch, 914 West 2nd, will sponsor its 6th annual event from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Everyone is invited to pick a pumpkin, walk the new nature trails, have a family photo taken and enjoy s’mores.
Proceeds will go toward maintaining the Orphan Grain Collection Center and the Pawnee County Food Pantry at 501 Main Street in Larned.

Open house scheduled

LARNED — The Pawnee County Food Pantry and the Orphan Grain Train will sponsor an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at their facility at 501 Main Street in Larned.
Tours will be available of the historic old courthouse building. A Wisconsin fish fry will be available with free-will donations  going to the Orphan Grain Train.

Commission to meet

LARNED — The Pawnee County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Pawnee County Courthouse.
Agenda items include:
10 a.m. — Mark Wagner, Pawnee County emergency management/zoning, Internet issue.
2 p.m. — Matt Heyn, Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Mike Goering, Shae Veach, PVCH facility update.

Alpha Kappa Master meets

LARNED — The Alpha Kappa Master chapter met Monday at the home of Glenna Melkus with Julie Ford as co-hostess.  President Merlene Baird announced the upcoming “Paddle Party” at Glory Be at 2 p.m. Nov. 4.  Tickets are available and for additional information call 285-6070.  
Secretary Connie Carlton announced that insurance is available from Beta Sigma Phi International for liability.
Janet Skelton led the Beta Book Drill on meetings which included regular, committees, and socials.  
Service chair Rosie Rein thanked members for bringing children’s clothing items for Hillside School and announced the chapter will provide bottled water for those working at the general election on Nov. 6 at the community building.
Julie Ford said donations are coming in for the vest for “Dutch” at the sheriff’s department.  
Alice Clapsaddle reported the next social will be an early morning coffee at 9 a.m. Oct. 27 at Scraps.  
Prior to the social hour, Glenna Melkus presented the program “Keukenhof Gardens” in Holland located near the 17th century city of Amsterdam.  
The next regular meeting will be at the rural home of Patty Smith beginning with a light supper at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12.  Julie Ford will present the program.



Hunter class Oct. 27

LARNED — The Larned Recreation Commission will sponsor an Internet assisted hunter education class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 27.
Participants must be 11 years of age to complete the class. For information and to pre-register, call the LRC, 620-285-6002.

United Way fundraiser

LARNED — United Way of Central Kansas will sponsor a local fundraiser by selling $10 Blackout T-shirts for the Oct. 25 Larned home football game against Pratt.
The Larned Committee for United Way fundraising is composed of Tama Hanson, Kevyn Soupiset, Gary Hartman, Bethany Skelton, Susan Aistrup, Jenny Manry, Cory Turner, Cindy Stejskal and Jane Fox.
